Free Iphone VPN

Im writting this post for a client who asked me how to configure the previous posted VPN server on Iphone. In order to configure the any VPN service on Iphone you will have to go to:

General > Network > VPN and then choose Add VPN Configuration

Next choose click on PPTP(which is the protocol of the free vpn service, if you want to configure other provider, choose the right protocol).

On description enter any name, on server field enter 216.155.136.84, on the Account field enter username (in my case anonymous) and also fill the password for the account (in my case anonymous). Thats all click on save button. Within few second the Iphone will automatically connect to the VPN server, of course if the authentication is passed. Here are some screen shots and a prove that the free vpn server 216.155.136.84 works correctly on my iphone.

Iphone vpn configurationIphone vpn connectedvpn working prof

Once you’ve created a VPN configuration, the VPN switch at the top of the VPN Configurations list can be used to turn VPN on or off. Choose your desired VPN configuration and tap or slide the switch to turn VPN on or off.

If you see a message that says Shared Secret is missing, you have probably choosed the wrong protocol, thats why i would advise you to ask the VPN provider which protocol does they use.

Jomfish & JCacheStorageJFDB.php

I had to install the JomFish 2.0.3 Stable on one of my Joomla 1.5.14 website today and i got an error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home//public_html/joomla/administrator/components/com_joomfish/classes/JCacheStorageJFDB.php on line 52
I had to do a research to find a solution to fix this error. The joomla and jomfish installation was clean so there was no dependecy error. I checked out the JomFish website and i read that all 2.0 and newer version of JomFish work only on Php 5.0 or newer. So I had to check the Php version under my host. And i saw that it was set to systems, default, which was probably php 4. I changed it to Php 5 and the jomfish started to work. If you face the same error here is how you can fix it:
1. Open your hosting’s cpanel
2. Go to Advanced tap, and click oh Php Configuration.
3. On the top of the page you can choose the Php version
cpanel4. Choose the Php 5 as version and click on the UPDATE button.
5. Thats all check out the JomFish now it will work.

How to Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to RTM (Final)

The final version of Windows 7 was released yesterday for MS Technet subscribers, but you can’t upgrade directly unless you do a litle hack which im going to show you now. You are unable to upgrade because a file cversion.ini checks the version before upgrading. Fortunately that can be fixed easily. If you use a ISO you will have to extract all files using an ISO extractor software or if you use an DVD, make a folder on your hard drive and copy all the files from DVD into the folder.

When you will have the Windows 7 final files on your HDD, open the folder and navigate to “sources: directory, where you will find the file cversion.ini. Open it and notepad will pop up, and you will see the text:

[HostBuilt]

MiniClient=7233.0

MiniServer=7100.0

Edit the MiniClient line to Miniclient=7000.0 so the notepad will look like this:

notepad-cversion1

Click File->Save and close the notepad or your default ini editor. Now simply run Setup.exe from your HDD, click on the Install button, choose UPGRADE on the wizard and follow the steps. That’s all, nice and easy hack, which will save you lot of time porting application and documents to the new Windows 7 release.

Iphone 3GS waterproof

I read that on web that Iphone 3GS is a waterproof device from and this weekend i went to lake. I saw a video on youtube a week ago, a guy was recording with his camera, and he put his Iphone 3GS on the pool while he was recording and i said amazing the iphone didn’t stop recording because it was working all the time. So i simply put the device on the lake while it was on stand by for a 5 second, and after that i pressed the HOME button, and the iphone was working so i said damn it really worked.

I was happy just for a few minutes till i chose to call my brother on the iPhone. I unlocked the iphone, opened the keypad and dialed his number. I was not hearing the  key pressing tone, but i thought maybe my cell phone is on silent. I entered his number and pressed the dial button, and i was waiting for the ring, but for more then 20 seconds i could not hear it. I hanged up and retried but again no voice from the speaker. I tried calling my carriers automated number, which opens the line automatically, the seconds started to count but still no sound. I put the phone on loud speaker and i was Finlay hearing a sound from my Iphone 3gs, and i realize that the speaker has a problem now. I felt that something else might be wrong so i started testing the wireless, GPS … all worked i was lucky. Another problem was the camera which was full of water. I had to use a fan to dry it and i was lucky again :) , drying the phone fixed the speaker problem too.

1. Shut Down the iphone when you use the fan to dry it, fan it for 10-15 minutes with hot air,

2. Make sure that the iphone wont get two hot because you might damage the battery, switch the fan to cold air from time to time.

3. Remove the SIM slot, to dry it better.

4. If its a first generation Iphone remove the cover, for 3g and 3gs you might unscrew the dive to open it up for better drying. You have many videos on youtube on this topic.

Conclusion: A month ago my girlfriend’s Iphone 3G got in the pool for more than one hour, and drying it with a fan again fixed everything and the device from that day works without any problem at all. Even that Iphone is not an waterproof device, still is very resistant against water. However beware of salted water, because you might not be able to fix it with a fan because the salt can cause  corosion on the device and its unable to restore it, you will have to replace many parts which can cost you more than buying a new iphone :) .

Apple firmware 3.0.1 info

Apple new firmware 3.0.1 came out today, a version that according fixes the latest iphone sms bug which was presented this week by two hackers. This bug  allows anyone to take full control over any other Iphone, simply by sending them an SMS message.

This is a Must Do Fix so you should upgrade immediately. Good news is that the current ultrasn0w and redsn0w are fully compatibile with 3.0.1 and you can unlock it right now. All you have to do is to upgrade using Itunes, then run redsn0w and point it to the old 3.0 firmware which you need to have already downloaded in your pc or go a google search to download it. After redsn0wing your iphone download ultrasn0w and you will unlock your iphone, iphone 3g or iphone 3gs device. You can find more informwation for these proceses on my previous post, so use the search button or simply check the archives of previus 2 months.

Here is what Dev-Team said about the 3.0.1 firmware:

Short version:

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

More details:

The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.

And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.

We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid.

No information from GeoHot for Purplera1n jailbrake or purplesn0w unlock yet.
